Registration of a Will is not mandatory in India. However, it is voluntarily resorted to at and extra cost, to add the Government of India as a witness to the Will.

Registration helps the surviving family in the event of a challenge on the authenticity of the Will, which in turn results in court intervention to prove genuineness of the Will.
